Adaptive Surface Technologies commercializes SLIPS — Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces — a coating chemistry spun out of Harvard's Wyss Institute from the lab of Joanna Aizenberg, one of the most cited names in bio-inspired materials. The physics is genuinely differentiated: rather than a superhydrophobic texture that fails under wear, SLIPS locks a thin liquid layer into a porous surface to present a smooth, self-replenishing, non-stick interface that repels water, oils, sticky residues, and biological fouling, outperforming Teflon on release and outlasting textured surfaces under abrasion. That maps onto large, real problems — marine biofouling (where anti-fouling directly improves fuel efficiency and displaces toxic biocidal paints), industrial throughput where product cling costs yield, and medical and consumer surfaces where preventing adhesion matters. The pitcher-plant-inspired mechanism is patent-protected and academically pedigreed, giving the Cambridge company a defensible licensing-and-supply position across multiple verticals from a single core chemistry. As a capital-light IP licensor rather than a capital-heavy manufacturer, AST can pursue many markets in parallel, and any single high-volume application — antifouling marine coatings alone is a multi-billion-dollar category — would justify the business several times over.
