Aether Diamonds

The bear case is largely settled fact: Aether's diamond business could not compete. In September 2024 its parent, Impossible Diamond, was acquired by lab-grown e-tailer Grown Brilliance for an undisclosed sum, and CEO Ryan Shearman was candid about why — "a U.S.-based lab really can't compete with India, and frankly the material has to go to India for cutting anyway," while the premium price collided with a lab-grown diamond market whose wholesale prices were collapsing. Lab-grown diamonds have deflated toward commodity economics faster than almost any consumer category, and a carbon-capture premium could not offset a US cost base against Indian growers and cutters. Sustainability rankings and "carbon-negative" storytelling did not create enough willingness-to-pay to sustain independent operations. Aether now produces under Grown Brilliance's umbrella while Shearman pursues carbon capture elsewhere via Loa Carbon — meaning the original venture thesis, a standalone premium carbon-negative diamond brand, did not clear. For a roster tracking materials-science franchises, Aether is a cautionary data point: an admired sustainability story undone by the brutal cost curve of a commoditizing luxury good, with the surviving value migrating out of the diamond into a separate carbon company.
