AquaRefining is Aqua Metals' patented electrochemical recycling process that recovers metals from spent batteries and black mass at room temperature in a closed loop, using electricity and water-based chemistry instead of high-temperature smelting or large volumes of harsh leaching reagents. Applied to lithium-ion feedstock, it recovers lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper as high-purity products suitable for new battery manufacturing, with lower emissions and waste than incumbent pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical routes. The company is engineering its first commercial-scale facility and has agreed to supply battery-grade nickel and lithium carbonate to lithium-iron-phosphate cathode maker 6K Energy.
