Founded in 2014 and based in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center in Nevada, Aqua Metals (NASDAQ: AQMS), led by CEO Steve Cotton, developed AquaRefining, a closed-loop electrochemical process that recovers metals at room temperature without the high-heat smelting or aggressive chemicals used in conventional recycling. After proving the approach on lead-acid batteries, the company pivoted to recovering lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper from spent lithium-ion batteries and black mass. In 2025 it advanced commercialization, signed a multi-year supply agreement to provide battery-grade nickel and lithium carbonate to 6K Energy, and raised additional institutional financing to fund engineering and site work for its first commercial-scale facility.
Aqua Metals offers a lower-emission, lower-chemical alternative to smelting and leaching for battery recycling, a bottleneck as EV battery volumes surge.
