An electrochemical cell that passes electricity through a molten mixture of iron oxide and other metal oxides, splitting the ore into pure liquid metal and oxygen with no carbon dioxide emissions. Running on renewable electricity, MOE replaces the coal-fired blast furnace at the heart of conventional steelmaking. The process is feedstock-flexible, works with lower-grade ores, and is being scaled toward industrial cells for tonnage-scale fossil-free iron and steel production.
A parallel application of the molten oxide electrolysis platform that recovers high-value critical metals such as vanadium, nickel, chromium, niobium and tin from mining byproducts, slags and other diverse feedstocks. Operated through Boston Metal's Brazilian subsidiary, it offers a scalable, lower-emission route to onshore critical-metal supply needed for advanced manufacturing, defense and AI infrastructure, reducing dependence on imported or carbon-intensive sources.
