Electra

Electra is attacking the single largest industrial-emissions prize on the board: iron and steel account for roughly a tenth of global CO2, and virtually all of it comes from coal-fired blast furnaces. Electra's answer is elegant — a modular, low-temperature electrochemical cell that dissolves iron from cheap, low-grade ores and electrowins 99% pure iron at roughly the temperature of a hot cup of coffee, powered entirely by intermittent renewables. Running cold and modular means it can ramp with solar and wind rather than needing baseload, and using low-grade ore widens the feedstock the industry can tap. The commercial signals are unusually strong for a pre-commercial materials company: the $186M Series B (April 2025, co-led by Capricorn and Temasek, bringing total funding to ~$214M) was followed by a demonstration plant in Jefferson County, Colorado — backed by a $50M Breakthrough Energy Catalyst grant plus a Colorado tax credit — targeting mid-2026 startup and up to 500 tonnes of iron a year. Crucially, the offtake is real: Nucor, the largest US steelmaker and an early investor, has committed to buying the demo iron for its electric-arc furnaces, and Meta is purchasing environmental attribute certificates, with Toyota Tsusho also in the mix. Green-iron feedstock that drops into existing EAF steelmaking, with the biggest US producer already committed, is the rare climate-hardware story with a customer waiting at the other end.

Electra has proven electrochemistry in a pilot; it has not proven it at the scale, cost and reliability that would displace a blast furnace, and the gap between 500 tonnes a year and the tens of millions of tonnes a single integrated mill produces is enormous. Low-temperature electrowinning of iron is a genuinely novel process, and novel electrochemical processes have a long history of hitting current-efficiency, electrode-fouling and scale-up walls that pilots never surface. The economics hinge on cheap, abundant, intermittent renewable power and on low-grade ore behaving predictably in solution — two assumptions that can each unravel a cost model. Steel is a brutally price-sensitive, thin-margin commodity; unless clean iron reaches parity or a durable green premium materializes, buyers revert to the incumbent, and the current US policy climate makes a reliable carbon premium anything but guaranteed. The Meta deal is EAC purchases, not iron offtake — a sustainability-accounting arrangement, not proof anyone will pay for the physical product at volume. Nucor's demo commitment is meaningful but small and self-interested (it is an investor protecting an option). And Electra is not alone: Boston Metal's molten-oxide electrolysis, hydrogen-DRI routes from the majors, and other green-iron entrants are all chasing the same decarbonization budget. At ~$214M raised, Electra is well short of the multi-billion-dollar capital a first commercial plant will demand, and every raise from here dilutes against execution risk that only compounds with scale.
