A novel electrolysis process that extracts magnesium metal directly from seawater and industrial brines rather than mining and calcining ore. The route is designed to be carbon neutral and lower cost than conventional thermal reduction or Chinese Pidgeon-process production, and it produces magnesium for lightweight alloys used in vehicles, aerospace structures and defense hardware. Magrathea is scaling from pilot toward a demonstration plant to establish a domestic source of a metal the U.S. currently imports almost entirely.
