Orbital's valuation and narrative ride on a product that has not yet shipped or been designed into a single deployed data center — the PFAS-free coolant and its refrigeration system are targeted for 2027, and everything before that is simulation, prototyping and partnership announcements rather than revenue. Discovering a promising molecule in silico is the easy part; qualifying a dielectric fluid for years of reliable operation across thousands of GPUs, at manufacturable cost and volume, is a long, capital-intensive grind where materials startups routinely stumble. The $50M Series B is modest for a company trying to be simultaneously a materials-discovery lab, a coolant manufacturer and a data-center hardware integrator (Orbital IT) — three hard businesses, each with its own scaling wall. Open-sourcing Orb builds credibility and adoption but hands the core discovery engine to competitors and hyperscalers who could screen their own candidates. The coolant market itself will attract incumbents: chemical majors and cooling specialists have the manufacturing, qualification and distribution muscle to fast-follow once a viable PFAS-free chemistry is proven. And demand hinges on immersion cooling winning versus direct-to-chip liquid cooling, which many operators prefer. Nvidia's backing is validation, not a purchase commitment, and a 2027 product timeline in a fast-moving compute market leaves ample room to be leapfrogged.
