Aptera Motors, based in Carlsbad, California, builds a two-passenger, three-wheeled solar-electric vehicle whose curved, highly aerodynamic body carries solar panels that the company says can add up to about 40 miles of range per day from sunlight, with up to roughly 400 miles on a full charge. The company was originally founded in 2006, liquidated in 2011 without mass-producing a vehicle, and relaunched by co-founders Steven Fambro and Chris Anthony in 2019. Aptera became publicly traded on Nasdaq under the ticker SEV in 2025. It remains pre-production: its 2025 annual report says production-intent validation and the move to low-volume manufacturing remain dependent on securing substantial additional capital.
The most prominent attempt to commercialize a genuinely solar-assisted passenger vehicle, betting that extreme efficiency can reduce charging dependence.
