LIFT solved eVTOL's chicken-and-egg problem by refusing to play the certification game at all: HEXA, its 18-rotor single-seat multirotor, flies under FAA Part 103 ultralight rules, which means no type certificate and no pilot's license — paying customers fly it themselves after brief training. That has made LIFT one of the only companies on earth generating revenue from ordinary people actually flying eVTOLs, years before Joby or Archer carry their first passenger, and it has done so on almost comically little capital: roughly $18M raised, against the billions consumed by certified-track peers. The Air Force validated the platform early — over $4M in AFWERX Agility Prime contracts and the first production eVTOL delivered to the service in 2021 — establishing a defense and public-safety channel for a cheap ($400–500K per unit), redundant, simple aircraft with obvious ISR, base logistics, and emergency-response use cases. The December 2025 strategy is the real option value: LIFT began FAA type certification of a commercial HEXA variant and laid out a three-tier family on one airframe — the license-free Hexa-U ultralight, a Hexa-S light-sport model designed for the newly enacted MOSAIC rules that permit flight over congested areas and at night, and a fully certified Hexa-C aimed at high-frequency commercial and eventually autonomous operation. MOSAIC is a genuine regulatory gift: it creates a middle path to commercial-adjacent operations at a fraction of full Part 21 certification cost. If even the Sport tier lands, LIFT converts its experiential business — flights sold at pop-up locations — into a repeatable aircraft-sales model with a proven design, a flight-tested fleet, and a training pipeline nobody else has.

LIFT is a micro-cap aviation company attempting three regulatory programs simultaneously on resources that would not cover one: $18M in cumulative funding, a headcount in the dozens, production of roughly one aircraft per month, and — the clearest signal of institutional appetite — its recent capital has come through StartEngine retail crowdfunding rather than venture rounds. Type certification is precisely the game LIFT's model was built to avoid, and for good reason: it is a nine-figure undertaking even for well-capitalized companies, and announcing the start of the process in December 2025 is categorically different from financing its completion. The core business meanwhile has a ceiling problem. Part 103 caps HEXA's weight, speed, and where it can fly — no congested areas, daylight only, single occupant — which confines the experiential product to pop-up entertainment at fixed sites, a leisure business with theme-park economics, not transportation. Defense interest has plateaued in public view: Agility Prime money validated the platform in 2021, but no production program of record has followed, and the Pentagon's small-eVTOL attention has shifted toward autonomous logistics platforms rather than crewed ultralights. Competition in the license-free niche is direct and better funded — Pivotal (backed by Larry Page) ships its Helix to consumers, and Jetson's One chases the same recreational buyer — while the MOSAIC light-sport lane will attract every ultralight and kit maker in the industry the moment it proves commercial. LIFT's decade of survival is admirable, but survival is not scale: without a capital partner an order of magnitude larger than anything it has raised, the three-aircraft roadmap is a menu, not a plan.
