Polestar in 2026 is a brand being kept alive by its parent's checkbook while its standalone economics deteriorate: Q1 2026 gross margin swung to negative 3.2% from positive 10.3% a year earlier on pricing pressure, tariffs, and mix — meaning record deliveries now lose money before a single krona of operating cost — and the year's "funding" is a carousel of related-party support: Geely loans, loan-to-equity conversions, and equity tranches from banks that look more like structured credit than conviction capital. Volvo Cars publicly stopped funding Polestar and has stepped back; every path now runs through Geely, whose patience is strategic and therefore revocable. The US story ended in the worst possible way: the Commerce Department declined authorization under the Connected Vehicle Rule, forcing Polestar to pull new vehicles from the American market from model year 2027 — not a retreat but an expulsion that brands the company as Chinese-controlled in every Western regulatory review to come, with Europe's own scrutiny of Chinese-built EVs (and tariffs on them) rising behind it. The Nasdaq listing survives only via a 1-for-30 reverse split of its ADSs after the stock spent months below $1, public float is a sliver of an equity overwhelmingly held by Geely-linked entities, and 7% delivery growth is anemic against a European premium-EV field where BMW, Mercedes, and Audi now ship compelling electric product at scale while Chinese brands undercut from below. Polestar occupies the most dangerous position in autos: a premium brand without pricing power, a volume brand without volume, and a "Swedish" brand whose passport no regulator believes. Equity holders are along for a ride whose destination — full Geely absorption at a convenience price — is increasingly legible.
