Supernal is an eVTOL & Advanced Air Mobility company founded in 2020 and based in Irvine, United States.
Supernal is the advanced air mobility arm of Hyundai Motor Group, based in Irvine, California, developing the S-A2, a battery-electric eVTOL designed to carry a pilot and four passengers. The company unveiled the S-A2 at CES 2024 with a target entry into service later this decade. In late 2025 the program hit turbulence: CEO Jaiwon Shin and CTO David McBride departed in August 2025, and in September 2025 Hyundai paused S-A2 development and laid off a large share of staff, with a senior business-development leader taking interim operational oversight. The pause cast doubt on Supernal's prior 2028 service target, though the company continues to operate as a Hyundai subsidiary through the restructuring.
A major automaker's bet on air taxis, and a cautionary signal for the sector after its high-profile program was paused and heavily restructured in late 2025.
