Tesla, founded in 2003 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, is one of the world's largest electric-vehicle makers and has staked its future on autonomy. Full Self-Driving (Supervised), a camera-only driver-assistance system trained on data from its customer fleet, is sold to owners and updated over the air. The same software runs Tesla's Robotaxi ride-hailing service, and in 2026 Tesla began low-volume production of the Cybercab, a two-seat vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals. Robotaxi's rollout remains limited, with Tesla citing safety validation as the gating factor, and the Cybercab still needs regulatory approval before public deployment. In October 2026 Tesla unveiled a next-generation Roadster fitted with SpaceX-derived thrusters.
Tesla is Waymo's main rival in robotaxis and the industry's biggest test of whether a camera-only system trained on fleet data can reach driverless operation without lidar or high-definition maps. Its scale as a carmaker gives it a data-collecting fleet no autonomy startup can match.
