Michelle Simmons
Simmons is a Scientia Professor of Quantum Physics at UNSW Sydney and founding director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation & Communication Technology. Born in the UK, she leads the only research group in the world capable of manufacturing atomically precise devices in silicon — placing individual phosphorus atoms in silicon with sub-nanometre accuracy. In 2011 her group demonstrated the world's first single-atom transistor, and in 2015 fabricated the narrowest conducting wires in silicon. She founded Silicon Quantum Computing in 2017, and was named Australian of the Year in 2018 for her contributions to quantum information science.
