Frank Wang (Wang Tao)
Born in Hangzhou and educated at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where he earned a BE and MPhil in electrical engineering. His undergraduate thesis — focused on a remote-controlled helicopter flight-control system — became the direct seed for the company. In 2006, at age 26, he founded DJI out of his HKUST dorm room, recruiting classmates as his first teammates. The venture had no prior startup or exit history: DJI was his first company from the start. Internally, he is known as an exacting, sometimes autocratic leader who prizes engineering depth over marketing flash — a posture that drove DJI to dominate roughly 70% of the global consumer drone market and made him the world's first drone billionaire.
