Kunal Girotra is an engineer and technology leader with a master's degree in chemical engineering from Stanford and roughly two decades of experience in energy and hardware. Early in his career he was an R&D engineer at Samsung Electronics and later Director of Process Engineering at solar firm ThinSilicon. He joined Tesla Energy in 2015, holding leadership roles across product, deployment, and operations and serving as head of Tesla's residential energy business until 2020. Drawing on that experience with the complexity of the home solar-and-battery market, he founded Lunar Energy in August 2020 to build the modular Lunar System home battery and the Gridshare virtual-power-plant software platform, and continues to lead the company as CEO.

The Lunar System is a modular residential battery that stores solar or grid power for use during peak hours and outages. It is built from stackable energy modules in roughly 5 kilowatt-hour increments, letting installers scale capacity to a household's needs, commonly in the 15-to-30 kilowatt-hour range. Managed through the Lunar app, the system provides backup power, time-of-use optimization, and self-consumption of home solar. Its compact, expandable design is positioned as an alternative to fixed-capacity home batteries, and it serves as the hardware node in Lunar's grid-connected virtual power plants.
Gridshare is Lunar Energy's AI-driven software platform for orchestrating fleets of home batteries, EV chargers, and flexible appliances as virtual power plants. By aggregating distributed storage across many homes, the Lunar VPP dispatches energy to balance the grid during peak demand and can compensate participating households. The platform forecasts load and generation, optimizes when batteries charge and discharge, and gives utilities and energy retailers a way to tap residential storage as a grid resource. It is the intelligence layer that turns individual Lunar Systems into a coordinated power network.
