Nabu Casa was founded in 2018 by Paulus Schoutsen, Pascal Vizeli, and Ben Bangert to put Home Assistant — the popular open-source, local-first smart-home platform Schoutsen created in 2013 — on sustainable financial footing without taking venture capital. The company funds itself entirely through Home Assistant Cloud subscriptions and sales of official Home Assistant hardware, deliberately avoiding the startup growth model so it stays free of outside investors whose goals might conflict with its open, privacy-focused mission. In 2024 Nabu Casa helped establish the Switzerland-based Open Home Foundation, becoming its inaugural rules-bound partner and providing the majority of its funding, and transferred Home Assistant, ESPHome, and 240-plus related projects to the foundation. By 2025 Home Assistant reported more than two million homes running the platform.
It is the financial engine behind Home Assistant, the leading open-source, privacy-first alternative to the cloud-dependent smart-home platforms run by Amazon, Google, Apple, and Samsung.
