Founded in 2006 by Harvard Business School students Chad and Eleanor Laurans, SimpliSafe pioneered self-installed, wireless home security with affordable professional monitoring and no long-term contracts. The Boston-based company is one of the largest residential security providers in the United States, selling base stations, entry and motion sensors, and indoor/outdoor cameras paired with optional 24/7 monitoring. In November 2025 private-equity firm GTCR completed its acquisition of SimpliSafe from prior owner Hellman & Friedman in a deal reported above $2.5 billion, with Hilary Schneider named CEO and Ty Shay named President; the company continues to operate as a standalone brand and the founders remained investors and board members.
SimpliSafe brought professionally-monitored home security to the DIY mass market and remains one of the top US residential security providers as the category consolidates under PE ownership.
