Founded in San Francisco in 2018 by Arch Rao, a former head of Tesla's Powerwall product, Span replaces a home's traditional breaker box with a smart electrical panel that monitors and controls power at the circuit level. The SPAN Panel pairs with an app to give homeowners real-time per-circuit visibility, automated backup during outages, and orchestration of solar, batteries, and EV charging. In January 2026 Span raised a $176 million Series C, and in March 2026 Eaton invested $75 million and formed a partnership to co-brand and lower the cost of smart panels; Span continues to operate independently. Reported total funding is roughly $419 million.
