ICEYE was founded in 2014 in Espoo, Finland by Rafal Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila, spinning out of Aalto University. It operates the world's largest constellation of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellites, which can image the ground regardless of cloud cover or darkness, and has built a business around persistent monitoring, natural-catastrophe insurance, and defense intelligence. In June 2026 ICEYE announced a Series F that raised 450 million euros (about $520 million) in primary investment led by General Atlantic at a valuation above 10 billion euros, with a secondary placement bringing the total round above 1 billion euros, underscoring surging European demand for sovereign space-based intelligence.
ICEYE proved that small SAR satellites could be mass-produced, making all-weather, day-and-night radar imaging cheap and frequent enough for insurers and militaries alike.
