Ryan Westerdahl earned a B.S. in engineering from the University of Washington, where he also worked as an undergraduate researcher in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He spent more than eight years at SpaceX as a propulsion dynamicist on the Merlin engine team, supporting vehicle analysis, anomaly resolution, and numerous Falcon launches between 2013 and 2021. In 2021 he co-founded Turion Space in Irvine, California — alongside colleagues from SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing — to build maneuverable Droid spacecraft for on-orbit imaging, inspection, and space domain awareness. As CEO he has secured government and defense contracts and led Turion through a $75 million-plus Series B in April 2026.

A line of maneuverable small satellites built for rendezvous, proximity operations, on-orbit imaging, and inspection. Droid.001 launched in 2023 and Droid.002 followed, with the pair reported to have delivered over 40,000 images. The platform is designed for dynamic space operations including future refueling and servicing, and Turion is scaling production from single-digit to dozens of vehicles per year. Droid carries the imaging payloads that generate Turion's non-Earth imaging products for commercial and defense customers.
Turion's space-domain-awareness service delivers high-resolution, resolved non-Earth imaging used to identify, track, and characterize objects in orbit. The company is licensed by NOAA as the first U.S. commercial provider of resolved non-Earth imaging, supplying decision-quality data to U.S. and allied operators. Customers use the imagery to inspect their own assets, monitor adversary spacecraft, and support custody and characterization tasks that ground-based sensors alone cannot accomplish.
