Vulcan Centaur is ULA's replacement for the Atlas V and Delta IV, in development since 2014, which debuted on Jan. 8, 2024, carrying the Peregrine lunar lander. After its second certification flight, on Oct. 4, 2024, the Space Force certified it for national security missions in March 2025. On its fourth flight, USSF-87 on Feb. 12, 2026, one of four Northrop Grumman GEM 63XL solid boosters suffered a nozzle burn-through; the rocket stayed on its planned trajectory, but the Space Force paused national security missions on Vulcan pending a technical review.
Atlas V is ULA's heritage rocket, which had completed 106 missions as of January 2026 and is being retired, with the 551 and N22 configurations still flying. It has launched Boeing's Starliner crew capsule and the ViaSat-3 F2 satellite. It flew eight missions for Amazon's Leo constellation, the last on July 2, 2026, with 29 satellites, after which Amazon's ULA missions move to Vulcan.
ULA builds the Centaur V upper stage that flies on Vulcan and supplied the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage that flew on NASA's Artemis I and II missions. On Oct. 23, 2026, it announced a collaboration with NASA to develop a larger Centaur upper stage, with about 50% more propellant, for the Space Launch System, supporting a 2028 Artemis launch and including work to human-rate the stage.
