David Helgason
Icelandic-born and raised in Reykjavik, David Helgason studied computer science at the University of Copenhagen before leaving to build startups. He co-founded Unity Technologies in Copenhagen in 2004 alongside Joachim Ante and Nicholas Francis, born from the trio's frustration with available game-development tools while building their own game, *GooBall*. Helgason served as Unity's CEO from 2004 to 2014, steering the company from a niche Mac-focused engine to the dominant cross-platform real-time 3D platform. After stepping back from the CEO role, he remained on the board and later returned to an operational role as Executive Vice President, focusing on strategic initiatives. Throughout his tenure, Helgason has been the public face of Unity's mission to "democratize game development," championing an unusually open, community-first posture that set Unity apart from its more restrictive competitors.
