"CAD for biology" is the most-promised, least-delivered vision in the field — Ginkgo, Zymergen, and a graveyard of foundry-era companies all pitched predictable, tooled cell design, and biology's irreducible complexity has repeatedly defeated the EDA analogy because cells are not deterministic circuits. Asimov's more grounded revenue path, the Edge cell-line licensing business, drops it into direct competition with established expression-system incumbents: Thermo Fisher, Sartorius, WuXi, and other CHO- and viral-vector-platform providers with entrenched pharma relationships, regulatory track records, and the scale to underprice a challenger. Its last disclosed raise was the January 2023 Series B; more than three years on with no new round surfaced, a company that raised $209M against a capital-hungry mission of both software development and wet-lab cell-line engineering may be approaching a raise in a far colder market than 2023. The Kernel-plus-Edge structure is also a focus question — building a genuinely useful genetic-design CAD tool and simultaneously productizing GMP-relevant cell lines are two very different, capital-intensive endeavors, and doing both well is hard for even a well-funded team. Cell-line licensing revenue is slow to build: pharma qualifies expression systems over years and switches reluctantly. If the CAD vision stays perpetually two years out and Edge is just another cell-line vendor, the $209M-backed premise looks oversized.
