Beam's core technology fuses a catalytically impaired CRISPR protein with a deaminase enzyme to chemically convert one DNA base into another — for example C-to-T or A-to-G — at a precisely targeted position, without cutting both strands of DNA. Because it avoids double-strand breaks, base editing sidesteps much of the unpredictable insertion, deletion, and rearrangement risk of conventional CRISPR. The platform includes several distinct DNA base editors plus an RNA base editor derived from Feng Zhang's lab, and underpins Beam's pipeline of in vivo and ex vivo genetic medicines.
