Caribou Biosciences

Established in 2011 in Berkeley, California by CEO Rachel Haurwitz alongside CRISPR pioneers Jennifer Doudna, Martin Jinek, and James Berger, Caribou Biosciences develops a genome-editing platform centered on its proprietary chRDNA (CRISPR hybrid RNA-DNA) guide technology. By replacing part of the RNA guide with DNA, chRDNA improves editing specificity and enables high-efficiency multiplex edits and gene insertions — capabilities Caribou applies to allogeneic, off-the-shelf cell therapies. Co-founder Doudna won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for CRISPR-Cas9. Caribou went public on Nasdaq (CRBU) in July 2021, raising roughly $304M in gross IPO proceeds.
