Colossal edits the genomes of living relatives to recreate traits of extinct species, with programs for the woolly mammoth, thylacine, dodo and bluebuck, the last added in April 2026. In March 2025 it showed gene-edited mice with mammoth-inspired fur, and in April 2025 it announced three gray wolf pups edited to carry dire wolf traits, which independent experts and the IUCN SSC Canid Specialist Group disputed were dire wolves. For the dodo, it keeps a colony of Nicobar pigeons, the dodo's closest living relative, and has created the cells that become their eggs and sperm.
GenoMorph, launched on Oct. 14, 2026, is Colossal's AI platform for choosing gene edits where ancient DNA is scarce. It combines 3D morphology, comparative genomics and developmental biology, trained on developmental data from chickens, quail, ducks and pigeons and on genetic data and skull measurements from more than 70 bird species. Colossal says it identified about 2,300 DNA editing targets for dodo craniofacial features, ready for lab testing; the platform recommends edits rather than making them.
Colossal turns tools built for de-extinction into separate companies: Form Bio, a computational biology platform spun out with $30 million in funding, Breaking, a plastic degradation startup, and Astromech, an AI-driven predictive modeling company for biology, valued at $2 billion in March 2026. It also plans to spin off its artificial animal womb technology.
