Constructive Bio was founded in 2022 in Cambridge, UK, spinning out of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology work of Jason Chin, who pioneered genome recoding and synthetic genomics; molecular biologist Ola Wlodek serves as CEO. The company synthesizes deeply recoded genomes that free up codons, then re-engineers the cell's translation machinery to incorporate non-canonical amino acids, turning living cells into programmable factories for therapeutics, new polymers, and chemicals. In September 2024 it closed a $58 million Series A led by Ahren, OMX Ventures, and Paladin Capital Group, bringing total funding to about $75 million, and added Nobel laureate and Abcam founder Sir Gregory Winter to its board.
It is one of the few companies attempting whole-genome synthesis and genetic-code expansion at commercial scale, the frontier of synthetic genomics that promises molecules natural cells cannot build.
