Dyno's licensing model is elegant but leaves it hostage to partners' program decisions and to the health of the AAV gene-therapy field itself — a field that has taken serious blows, with clinical safety events (including high-dose AAV toxicity), commercial disappointments, and program cancellations that shrink the pool of therapies needing next-generation capsids. Option exercises are encouraging, but the dollar amounts recognized to date are modest ($7M from Roche, $15M from Astellas as upfronts), and the large milestone figures are contingent on partner programs actually advancing through the clinic and to market — years away and outside Dyno's control. The capital position is notably stale: the roster shows the $100M Series A from May 2020 as the last major round, roughly $109M raised total, with no disclosed later financing despite six years elapsed — a long silence for a company competing in a hot AI-biology market, and a possible signal about fundraising conditions. The competitive frontier is intensifying: AAV engineering is now pursued by Capsida, 4D Molecular Therapeutics, Voyager, and internal pharma teams, while non-viral and lipid-nanoparticle delivery advances threaten AAV's dominance for some indications entirely. And the platform's dependence on expensive NHP data creates a cost structure competitors using cheaper in-vitro or computational proxies may undercut. Dyno's model works only if AAV stays central to gene therapy and its partners execute — two things it cannot guarantee on a six-year-old balance sheet.
