Emerald Cloud Lab (ECL) operates a remote-access laboratory where scientists run physical experiments from their computers, sending samples in and directing more than 200 unique instruments via a programmable interface rather than working at a bench. It grew out of antiviral biotech Emerald Therapeutics, co-founded by chemistry PhDs and longtime friends Brian Frezza and DJ Kleinbaum, and is backed by investors including Founders Fund. Its proprietary Symbolic Lab Language (SLL) has been used to run hundreds of thousands of experiments and was made open source for research use; ECL operates a cloud-lab facility in Austin, Texas.
Pioneered the 'cloud lab' model in which experiments are written as code and executed remotely, a template now being adopted by universities and industry.
