Evonetix has been developing its silicon platform since 2015 and, a decade in, is still at the early-access stage — shipping first deliveries rather than selling a commercial instrument at volume — which underscores how brutally hard it is to make MEMS-controlled DNA synthesis work reliably, accurately, and economically. Hard-tech at the intersection of semiconductors and biochemistry compounds two of the most unforgiving engineering disciplines, and the history of "DNA on a chip" is littered with platforms that demoed impressive parallelism but struggled with yield, error rates on long assemblies, and cost per base at scale. The capital position — roughly $70M with no major new round disclosed since the 2023 Series B extension — is thin for a semiconductor-plus-biology venture that must fund chip fabrication, instrument engineering, reagent chemistry, and a commercial organization simultaneously, and the long funding gap during a period of rapid progress at rivals is a warning sign. Meanwhile the target market is not waiting: Twist has industrialized silicon-based synthesis and dominates on cost and scale, enzymatic players (DNA Script, Ansa, Molecular Assemblies) attack the benchtop and speed angles, and the incumbents keep pushing length and accuracy. Evonetix must prove not just that its chip works but that it is meaningfully better on the axis customers actually buy — cost, length, accuracy, and turnaround together — against competitors already at commercial scale. A decade of R&D with early-access deliveries is promising science; whether it becomes a fundable, scalable business remains genuinely unproven.
