A fermentation-based process for producing 1,4-butanediol (BDO), a building-block chemical used in plastics, spandex, automotive parts, and apparel, from renewable feedstocks such as sugar instead of fossil sources. Geno licenses the process to manufacturing partners who build and operate plants; spandex maker Hyosung TNC is investing to construct Geno-powered Bio-BDO capacity, and a large Bio-BDO plant came online in 2025. The process is one of the few industrial-biotech fermentation routes to reach commercial-scale chemical production.
Geno's development program for renewably sourced nylon intermediates, including hexamethylenediamine (HMD), a key precursor for nylon-6,6 used in textiles, carpets, and engineering plastics. The goal is a plant-based route to nylon building blocks that brands can adopt to lower the fossil-carbon footprint of fibers and durable goods. Geno develops the biology and process and partners with chemical and consumer companies to scale production, extending its fermentation platform from BDO into higher-value polymer feedstocks.
