Empatica is an MIT Media Lab spinoff, co-founded by Matteo Lai, Rosalind Picard and Simone Tognetti, that builds medical-grade wearables and AI for continuous physiological monitoring. Its earlier Embrace smartwatch was among the first wearables to win FDA clearance for seizure detection in epilepsy, and its current flagship, EmbracePlus, is a research- and clinical-grade wrist sensor used in drug trials, remote monitoring and government health studies. Partners and programs have included HHS, USAMRDC and the NASA-funded TRISH, and in 2024 EmbracePlus was selected for a U.S. Department of Defense PTSD treatment study. The company operates from Boston and Milan.
