Omi's public record since its January 2025 splash is uncomfortably quiet: $2M in total disclosed funding, no announced follow-on round, no verified sales figures, and a founder whose most visible moves — renaming the device from "Friend" after losing the name to Avi Schiffmann's rival, marketing a "brain interface" that is an electrode taped to the head with medical tape — read as attention engineering more than durable company-building. The competitive math is brutal. Plaud reached $100M ARR and 2M devices with a professional wedge and retail distribution; Amazon and Meta absorbed Bee and Limitless precisely to bundle ambient capture into ecosystems with billions of users; and Apple, Google, and OpenAI (whose io hardware ambitions loom over the whole category) can ship always-listening assistants as a feature, not a product. Against that, a $2M open-source startup has no distribution, no moat in commodity pendant hardware built on the same Shenzhen supply chain as its clones, and an open codebase any competitor can fork. The privacy positioning is double-edged: always-on recording of third parties collides with two-party-consent laws regardless of where the data is stored, and HIPAA marketing invites scrutiny the company is not resourced to survive. Open source also structurally caps monetization — the users most attracted to Omi are the ones least likely to pay subscription fees, and hardware margins at $89 fund nothing. The base rate for this category is stark: standalone AI wearables have so far ended in acquisition, pivot, or Rabbit-style distress, and Omi has less capital than any of those cautionary tales had at the same stage.
