Oura enters its IPO window as the rare consumer-hardware company with software economics and a legal moat it has now proven in court. The numbers compound on every axis: more than 5.5 million rings sold, on pace to surpass five million paid members in mid-2026 (a fourfold increase in two years), roughly $1B of 2025 revenue that doubled the prior year, and CEO Tom Hale pointing to nearly $2B in 2026 sales — momentum that carried an over-$900M Series E at an $11B valuation (October 2025, Fidelity-led) and a confidential US IPO filing in May 2026 into a reopening listings market. The September 2025 ITC victory was strategically decisive: every asserted claim of Oura's patent was held valid and infringed, Ultrahuman's rings were excluded from the US market outright, and RingConn settled into a royalty-bearing license — meaning Oura's chief form-factor imitators now either can't sell in its biggest market or pay it to do so. The moat runs deeper than patents: a decade of longitudinal biometric data trains illness-detection, sleep, and women's-health algorithms no entrant can replicate quickly, Dexcom is both partner and investor (linking the ring into glucose data), and the just-shipped, substantially miniaturized Ring 5 extends the hardware lead while AI coaching deepens the $5.99/month subscription attach. Samsung's Galaxy Ring validated the category without denting Oura's growth. A profitable-scale, subscription-majority health platform with courtroom-tested IP, filing to list at the exact moment wearables-as-preventive-health goes mainstream, is the closest thing this sector has to a blue chip.

Oura is priced for a future in which nothing goes wrong in a category where everything eventually does. An $11B private mark against roughly $1B of revenue embeds double-digit multiples on hardware-led sales, and the IPO the company needs to justify it will subject wearables' ugliest metrics — churn, replacement cycles, subscription resentment — to public scrutiny for the first time; the CEO has already spent 2026 publicly defending why a $349 ring also requires a monthly fee, which is not a debate category leaders win forever. The competitive picture is heavier than the ITC win suggests: patents expire and settlements license rivals back in (RingConn is already selling its Gen 3 in the US under exactly such a license, undercutting on price with no subscription and 14-day battery), Samsung bundles its ring into the Galaxy ecosystem at effective prices Oura cannot match, and an Apple ring — perpetually rumored — would compress the premium segment overnight, exactly as the Apple Watch did to Fitbit, whose fate remains the category's cautionary precedent. Growth math gets harder too: at five million paid members, the enthusiast-early-adopter pool is largely harvested, and the next tranche of buyers is more price-sensitive, more churn-prone, and more likely to already own a competing wearable. Illness-detection and women's-health claims invite regulatory attention as they medicalize; data-privacy politics around a Finnish company holding intimate biometrics for millions (including US military users) is a standing headline risk. If public-market investors decide Oura is a hardware company with a services attach rather than a health platform, the comps are Garmin multiples, not $11B — and everyone who bought the Series E needs the latter.
