Plaud's $100M ARR was built in a window that is closing: the company sells dedicated hardware for a capability — recording, transcribing, and summarizing conversations — that is being absorbed into free, default software everywhere. Apple now ships call recording and AI summaries natively in iOS; Otter, Granola, and every meeting platform handle the professional use case with zero hardware; and the model providers keep collapsing the transcription-summarization stack into commodity API calls. A device whose job is to be a microphone with a subscription attached is one OS release away from redundancy for most of its funnel. The competitive flank is armed and cheaper: Amazon's Bee costs a fraction of a Plaud device with Prime-scale distribution, Meta is embedding Limitless technology into its wearables line, and Shenzhen clones of the Note ship weekly. Plaud's China-centered hardware supply chain and reported Chinese investor base sit squarely in the path of US tariff and data-security politics — awkward for a product whose value proposition is recording American professionals' confidential conversations, in a legal environment where two-party-consent violations are a per-incident liability. The financial narrative also rests heavily on the company's own press releases: the $2B valuation traces to Chinese media reports the company has only partially engaged (it denied the reported Tencent involvement), ARR composition and churn are undisclosed, and consumer-adjacent subscriptions historically decay fast once the novelty of "AI notes" becomes table stakes. Plaud won the first innings of AI notetaking decisively; the bear case is that it is a feature company monetizing a window, and the window's owners — Apple, Amazon, Meta, OpenAI — have all now noticed.
