Polar Electro was founded in 1977 in Kempele, Finland by Seppo Säynäjäkangas, and developed the world's first wireless heart-rate monitor — a foundational technology for modern fitness wearables. The company remains a privately held, family-influenced Finnish manufacturer with roughly 1,200 employees and a global distribution network. Today Polar makes GPS multisport and training watches such as the outdoor-oriented Grit X and the performance-focused Vantage series, along with chest-strap and optical heart-rate sensors widely used by athletes and researchers. Polar competes on the depth and accuracy of its physiological and recovery analytics rather than on smart-device breadth.
Polar invented wireless heart-rate monitoring and remains a benchmark for training-science accuracy, anchoring the heritage end of the fitness-watch market.
