Somnee

The consumer sleep-headband category is a graveyard, and Somnee has not yet shown it can escape the pattern: Dreem burned through tens of millions before pivoting out of consumer, Philips discontinued SmartSleep, and Kokoon and Muse settled into niche scale — all defeated by the same stack of problems Somnee faces: nightly-wear comfort and compliance, hardware costs, churn once novelty fades, and efficacy claims that outrun independent evidence. Somnee's headline results remain company-run studies; there is no large independent RCT behind the "outperforms CBT-I" comparison, and the wellness positioning that keeps its transcranial electrical stimulation outside FDA device review also caps the claims — and the reimbursement — that would justify medical pricing. The capital position is fragile for a hardware-plus-neuroscience company: roughly $10M raised in the disclosed 2025 round is seed-scale money against second-generation hardware manufacturing, a subscription service, an API program, and consumer acquisition in a market where Whoop, Oura, and Eight Sleep spend more on marketing in a quarter than Somnee has raised in its lifetime. Those adjacent giants are also the strategic threat: sleep is the retention feature of every major wearable platform, Apple now screens for sleep apnea from the wrist, Eight Sleep intervenes through the mattress, and new-generation insomnia drugs compete for the same desperate consumer. The NBA halo and the Walker brand generate press, but elite-athlete pilots are notoriously poor predictors of mass-market subscription economics. Until an independent trial validates the effect size, Somnee is priced on a hypothesis.
