Sonical is making the platform bet of the hearables category: that ear-worn computers will follow smartphones from fixed-function firmware to an app ecosystem, and that the operating system which enables that transition captures disproportionate value. Founder Gary Spittle's audio-semiconductor pedigree shows in the strategy — CosmOS is built to sit on dedicated hearable silicon and let manufacturers and users install capabilities post-purchase: playback, communication, noise control, hearing enhancement, and health monitoring mixed and matched on one device. The thesis crossed from slideware toward shipping reality in January 2026, when Sonical and XMOS announced commercial availability of Remora, billed as the first production-ready "Headphone 3.0" platform, pairing CosmOS with XMOS's XCORE audio silicon to give brands a scalable route to software-defined, field-upgradeable headphones. The ecosystem scaffolding is assembling: a CosmOS Certified program, 100-plus technology developers building on the platform, and partnerships spanning Sigma Connectivity (design services), HEAR360 (spatial audio), and Dolphin Design (silicon IP). The timing argument is strong — OTC hearing regulation, AI voice interfaces, and health sensing are converging on the ear simultaneously, and the branded-audio OEMs squeezed between Apple's ecosystem and cheap white-label Chinese product need exactly this differentiation layer, none of them able to fund an OS alone. Platform businesses at this stage are options, not valuations: Sonical has raised only about $4M, so even a single major OEM design win on Remora would reprice the company by multiples, and the acquirer logic — any chip vendor or audio brand wanting the app-layer story — provides a floor scenario well above the capital in.
