Sonical is an early-stage company founded in 2020 by Gary Spittle, a longtime audio-semiconductor engineer, to enable what it calls the Headphone 3.0 market. It is developing CosmOS, an open operating system — along with dedicated hearable silicon and a developer ecosystem — that lets earbuds and hearing devices run downloadable apps, turning them into customizable, wearable "Smart Ear" computers for listening, communication, hearing assistance and health monitoring. Based in San Mateo, California, Sonical has raised over $4M against a $5M seed target and in 2025 launched a Wefunder crowdfunding campaign and a CosmOS Certified technology program, citing 100-plus technology developers building on the platform.
Sonical is betting that hearables follow smartphones into an app-platform era, an open OS that could let third parties build hearing-health and biometric apps onto ear-worn devices.
