Founded in 2008 by Éric Carreel, Cédric Hutchings, and Fred Potter, Paris-based Withings pioneered the Wi-Fi connected scale before expanding into blood-pressure monitors, sleep sensors, thermometers, and smartwatches. Its flagship ScanWatch line is a family of hybrid analog smartwatches that integrate medical-grade ECG, SpO2, and sleep-apnea detection while keeping a classic watch face and multi-week battery life — ScanWatch was among the first hybrid smartwatches to earn medical-device certification in Europe. Acquired by Nokia in 2016, the company was bought back and made independent again by Carreel in 2018, and has since added an AI health layer (Withings Intelligence) and concept devices like the Omnia health mirror. In December 2024 it received a roughly €20.7M investment through France's France 2030 initiative.
Withings is the leading European challenger blending consumer-grade design with clinically certified sensing, anchoring the medical-grade end of the smartwatch market against Apple and Garmin.
