BitGo is the picks-and-shovels bet that finally has a public currency. Thirteen years old, it pioneered multi-signature custody, holds over $100B of platform assets, and operates regulated trust companies that underpin wallet and custody infrastructure across much of the industry — the boring, security-first plumbing that survives every cycle while exchanges and tokens blow up around it. The January 22, 2026 NYSE IPO priced at $18, above range, raising ~$213M at a ~$2.1B valuation, and the debut-day pop of as much as 35% confirmed public-market appetite for regulated crypto infrastructure as the year's first crypto listing. The setup from here is asymmetric: BitGo Prime bundles trading, lending, and settlement against custodied collateral, so every institutional allocator that arrives through ETFs, corporate treasuries, or bank charters deepens wallet share; custody revenue scales with assets, not sentiment, and recovers mechanically when prices do. Being public is itself a moat — audited financials, currency for M&A, and a trust signal rivals like Fireblocks cannot match while private. At roughly one-quarter the valuation Circle or Coinbase command per dollar of strategic position, BitGo is the cheap, durable way to own institutional crypto adoption without underwriting any single token, chain, or exchange.

The market has already voted: within sessions of the debut pop, BTGO slid below its $18 IPO price into the mid-teens — roughly 20–25% under the offer by late January — and then the June 2026 crash took bitcoin below $60,000 and total crypto capitalization down ~48% from peak. That matters mechanically, not just sentimentally: custody fees are charged on assets under custody, so BitGo's revenue base shrank double-digits in a quarter through no fault of its own, the structural flaw of an AUC-linked model heading into a bear market. Competitively, BitGo is squeezed by better-positioned rivals on every flank: Coinbase custodies the ETF complex and now holds a conditional OCC national trust charter, Anchorage has the federal bank charter plus Tether's balance sheet behind it, and Fireblocks owns the fintech-integration layer — custody pricing compresses toward utility economics while the differentiated prime-brokerage revenue BitGo needs is exactly what Coinbase Prime and Galaxy contest hardest. The IPO raised ~$213M, modest ammunition against those balance sheets. A $2.1B valuation for a sub-scale custodian losing pricing power, whose stock broke issue in week one and whose fee base tracks a falling market, prices in a recovery it does not control.
