Lido remains the systemically central protocol in Ethereum staking — stETH is the largest single pool of staked ETH, the default yield-bearing collateral across DeFi, and the deepest liquidity network in the category — and it has just retooled for the institutional cycle. Lido V3 went live on mainnet January 30, 2026, introducing stVaults: modular staking infrastructure that lets institutions — ETF issuers, custodians, liquid funds — run or choose their own validators while still minting stETH against their stake, separating validator control from liquidity provision. That directly answers the institutional objection (mandated operator sets, compliance segregation) that previously routed big allocators around Lido, and the protocol is targeting 1 million ETH staked through custom vaults in 2026. The macro setup is the strongest in Lido's history: staking-enabled ETH ETFs and rising institutional ETH treasuries all need liquid staking exposure, and stETH's five-year Lindy record, curated professional operator set, and unmatched DeFi integration surface (collateral on Aave, Morpho, and everywhere else) make it the path of least resistance. Even after share erosion, Lido still controls roughly a quarter of all staked ETH — tens of billions in TVL throwing off protocol fees — and no competitor combines its liquidity depth, integration breadth, and now institutional-grade modularity.

Lido's market share tells a one-way story: from roughly 32% of staked ETH down to 24% by 2026, ground surrendered to restaking protocols, exchange staking, and newer liquid-staking entrants — dominance eroding precisely as the protocol matured. The institutional thesis has a hole: ETF issuers and custodians can stake natively through Coinbase, Figment, or their own validators without ever minting stETH — they need staking, not Lido — and stVaults' pitch that institutions will want stETH liquidity is an assumption, not evidence; the 1M ETH vault target is aspiration against entrenched custodial relationships. Value capture is the structural flaw for any investor: fees flow to node operators and the DAO treasury, while LDO — the only investable instrument — carries governance rights but no enforceable claim on cash flows, a token that has chronically underperformed the protocol's fundamentals for exactly this reason. Regulatory ambiguity compounds it: stETH sits unresolved as a possible security, and Lido's DAO structure offers no corporate shield. Systemic centrality cuts both ways — Ethereum's social layer actively worries about Lido nearing consensus-threatening share, capping upside by design: the community punishes Lido for winning too much. An asset whose success is politically constrained, whose cash flows are legally unclaimable, and whose share is falling is a difficult long at any price.
