BlueNalu was founded in 2018 in San Diego by Lou Cooperhouse, developing cell-cultivated seafood beginning with bluefin tuna toro, the fatty belly cut prized in high-grade sushi and sashimi. The company grows the fish from cells rather than catching wild tuna, targeting a species that is overfished and difficult to farm. BlueNalu has filed a regulatory dossier with the US FDA and says it will be able to begin selling once it receives a 'no questions' letter. The company raised an 11 million dollar round led by Agronomics, Siddhi Capital and Lewis & Clark AgriFood with participation from strategic partners including Griffith Foods, Pulmuone and Rich Products, and has also raised debt financing, bringing total reported fundraising to more than 80 million dollars.
BlueNalu is among the furthest-along cultivated-seafood companies in US regulatory consultation and is targeting bluefin tuna toro, a high-value, supply-constrained product that makes it a key test of cultivated seafood economics.
