Helaina is a Precision Fermentation company founded in 2019 and based in New York, United States. It has raised $83M in total funding, most recently a Series B in 2024.

Helaina partners with Nestlé to research bioactive proteins for infant nutrition via precision fermentation.
Helaina's lead ingredient, effera, is a bio-identical human lactoferrin produced by precision fermentation rather than extracted from milk. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding, immune-supporting protein found in human breast milk, and Helaina markets effera as functionally equivalent to the human protein, with applications in women's health, active nutrition, healthy aging and early-life nutrition. Sold as an ingredient for consumer-packaged nutrition products and supplement formats, effera is positioned as the first human lactoferrin available at commercial scale, distinguishing it from the bovine lactoferrin widely used in supplements and infant formula.
