Founded in 2015 as Memphis Meats by cardiologist Uma Valeti, scientist Nicholas Genovese and engineer Will Clem, the company rebranded to Upside Foods and is headquartered in Berkeley, California. It grows real meat directly from animal cells in steel cultivators rather than raising and slaughtering livestock, with an initial focus on chicken. In November 2022 the US FDA issued Upside a 'no questions' letter on its cultivated chicken, and in 2023 the company received USDA grant of inspection, making it one of the first two companies authorized to sell cell-cultured meat in the United States. Its $400 million Series C in 2022, led by Temasek and the Abu Dhabi Growth Fund, pushed total funding past $600 million and gave the company a valuation above $1 billion.
Upside Foods is the most heavily capitalized cultivated-meat company in the US and one of the first cleared by both the FDA and USDA, making it a bellwether for whether cell-cultured meat can reach commercial scale.
