Wonder is Marc Lore's attempt to build the mealtime super-app by vertical integration on a scale no food-delivery pure-play has attempted, and he has assembled the pieces with characteristic aggression. Its food halls run many restaurant brands out of one kitchen for dine-in, pickup and delivery; it bought Blue Apron (2023) for meal kits and Grubhub (2024, ~$650M from Just Eat Takeaway) for a national delivery marketplace and consumer reach, then added food-media company Tastemade in 2025. The market has bought the story: a $600M round in May 2025 (New Enterprise Associates, Accel, GV, Forerunner, Amex Ventures) lifted the valuation past $7B from ~$2.1B months earlier, with total funding above $1.85B and roughly $1.5B of it raised in a single year — extraordinary conviction from top-tier investors in a hard capital environment. The physical footprint is ramping fast (46 locations, targeting 90+ by end of 2025, roughly one opening a week). The thesis is coherent: owning the kitchen, the brands, the meal-kit channel, the delivery marketplace and the media flywheel lets Wonder capture margin at every layer and cross-sell across a single consumer relationship — a structurally different, and potentially far more profitable, model than a commission-only delivery app. Lore's track record (Jet.com, Diapers.com) is exactly the kind investors bet on for a capital-intensive, winner-take-most land grab.

Wonder is a cash furnace stapling together three historically money-losing businesses — physical food halls (real estate, labor, buildout), meal kits (Blue Apron, a chronic value-destroyer), and third-party delivery (Grubhub, a distant third-place marketplace losing share to DoorDash and Uber Eats) — on the theory that combining unprofitable businesses produces a profitable one, which is unproven and often false. Grubhub laid off 500-plus employees (over 20% of its workforce) after the Wonder acquisition, a sign the crown-jewel asset is shrinking, not thriving, and it was bought for $650M after Just Eat had paid far more — a declining asset in a market where the top two players are pulling away. The $7B valuation, tripling in months on Lore's narrative and $1.5B of fresh capital, prices in flawless execution of a super-app vision that has repeatedly failed in food. Opening a store a week is operationally punishing, and food-hall unit economics at scale are unproven; every new location is fixed cost that must find demand in an already-saturated urban delivery market. The whole edifice depends on continuous large capital infusions — over $1.8B raised and still pre-profit — and if the funding music stops or the cross-sell flywheel doesn't materialize, Wonder is left owning a collection of low-margin, competitively besieged businesses at a valuation with no room for error.
