Boston Dynamics
Acquired by Hyundai Motor Group · 2021 · $1.1B Boston Dynamics is among the most recognized names in advanced robotics, originally spun out of MIT in 1992 by Marc Raibert. The company is best known for its viral demonstrations of agile, dynamic robots and now builds a commercial lineup that spans the Spot quadruped for industrial inspection, the Stretch case-handling robot for warehouse logistics, and the all-electric Atlas humanoid targeting manufacturing applications.
The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, which acquired a controlling 80% stake from SoftBank in a deal valuing Boston Dynamics at approximately $1.1 billion (closed June 2021). Hyundai has positioned the company as a strategic pillar of its robotics and mobility ambitions, announcing in 2025 plans to purchase tens of thousands of robots to deploy across its manufacturing footprint.
Boston Dynamics operates from Waltham, Massachusetts, and has expanded its commercial footprint via its Orbit software platform, which provides fleet management and inspection analytics. The electric Atlas, unveiled in 2024 as a successor to the hydraulic research platform, is actively being piloted in automotive manufacturing environments including Hyundai plants.
Boston Dynamics is the incumbent reference point for advanced legged robotics and sets the expectations for what a commercial humanoid and quadruped platform must deliver.
