Varjo

Prior to co-founding Varjo in 2016, Melakari spent over 15 years at Nokia and later Microsoft, where he specialized in computational imaging, camera algorithms, and display systems. He was a senior engineer within Nokia Technologies, the advanced R&D unit from which Varjo's founding team — including CEO Urho Konttori — eventually spun out. That deep imaging expertise directly informed Varjo's core technical achievement: building XR headsets capable of human-eye-resolution displays, a leap enabled by combining high-density micro-OLED panels with optical blending techniques that Melakari and his team developed. As CTO, he oversees the hardware and display architecture that positions Varjo's XR-4 series as the benchmark for simulation-grade visual fidelity in aerospace, automotive design, and pilot training.

Prior to co-founding Varjo in 2016, Eiden came from Helsinki's mobile-product ecosystem, having held design and product experience roles that bridged Nokia and Microsoft — the same talent pool that produced several of Varjo's early team members. As CXO, he leads the experience strategy behind Varjo's human-eye-resolution XR headsets, ensuring that the visual fidelity demanded by aerospace, automotive, and training customers is matched by intuitive, mission-grade usability. His focus on "experience" as a core differentiator — not an afterthought — has shaped Varjo's reputation for building tools that professionals treat as instruments rather than gadgets.

Previously a lead industrial designer at Nokia and later Microsoft, Rainisto spent over a decade shaping the look and feel of flagship mobile devices — most notably as a designer on the Lumia series. He holds a degree from Helsinki's University of Art and Design (now part of Aalto University). At Varjo, which he co-founded in 2016 alongside fellow Nokia alumni, Rainisto translated deep experience in precision hardware craftsmanship into the industrial design language of the company's simulation-grade headsets, ensuring that devices built for aerospace and automotive professionals achieve both ergonomic rigor and functional clarity.

Prior to co-founding Varjo, Konttori spent over a decade at Nokia and subsequently Microsoft, where he led product management for Nokia's imaging division — the team behind the acclaimed PureView camera technology. At Microsoft, he continued work on computational imaging and display optics following the Nokia devices acquisition. That deep expertise in optical systems and human visual perception became the technical foundation for Varjo's defining pursuit: building XR headsets with true human-eye-resolution displays. Konttori has publicly articulated a conviction that professional XR adoption hinges on achieving retinal resolution — displays sharp enough that the human eye cannot discern individual pixels — and has steered Varjo's engineering roadmap relentlessly toward that benchmark.
